Madonna, known for her ability to command the public’s attention, left many fans puzzled with a recent social media post.
Taking to TikTok, the iconic singer appeared to make a statement, dressed in a white outfit with vibrant pink hair and holding up a pair of neon pink panties.
As the words “If I miss, I’m gay” flashed on the screen, Madonna tossed the underwear across her room, aiming for a small trash bin. However, the panties fell short, prompting a flamboyant shrug from the star before she walked aw.
The cryptic nature of the video sparked immediate confusion among fans, who debated whether Madonna was coming out as gay or if the post was meant to be taken with a dose of humor. “Did Madonna just come out? And I’m witnessing it in real time??” pondered one fan, echoing the sentiments of many.
However, some fans quickly pointed out that Madonna has long been open about her sexuality. Referencing a 1991 interview with The Advocate, where Madonna discussed bisexuality, one fan remarked: “Madonna has been an out bisexual for literally decades.”
The singer herself even once famously stated: “I think everybody has a bisexual nature.”
Moreover, other events have also hinted at Madonna’s continued embrace of her LGBTQ identity. In June 2022, she made headlines for sharing a passionate kiss with openly queer rapper Tokischa during NYC Pride. The duo later released a duet titled Hung Up on Tokischa, a remix of Madonna’s 2005 hit Hung Up.
Regardless of the ambiguity surrounding her recent TikTok post, Madonna will always be known for her staunch advocacy of LGBTQ rights. Throughout her career, she has used her platform to raise awareness and support for the community, particularly during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.
Madonna’s contributions have not gone unnoticed, with GLAAD recognizing her efforts twice — first in 1991 for “raising gay awareness,” and again in 2019 as their “advocate for change,” per The Guardian.
